Please read all the information to avoid costly fines!
The law requires you to do a “tag return” when you move out of Maryland, when you cancel your car’s insurance, or simply when you no longer need your tags anymore. Should incase you have more than one calendar year left on your vehicle’s registration, you can apply for a refund for the cost of the remaining year. If you qualify for a refund, please make sure to fill out the “Application for Registration plate refund” before you return your tags.
You can send them by email, along with your vehicle’s registration card to the Glen Burnie MVA office at 6601 Ritchie Highway, N.E. Glen Burnie, MD 21062. Please make sure to send them using certified mail with return receipt requested to avoid any problems.
Note: Do not cancel your vehicle’s insurance until you received a confirmation from the MVA.
If you cancel your insurance and you have not return your tags; you can lose your license plates and vehicle privileges, pay an uninsured motorist penalty fee and pay a restoration fee of up to $25 for a vehicle’s registration. Keep in mind that the fee for an uninsured motorist is $150 for the first 30 days and $7 for each day after that.
If you are returning 5 to 9 license plates at once, you need to complete the form VR-317 “MVA Tag Return Log Sheet” along with your registration card. You can take them to any full-service MVA office or send them through a delivery service. However, if you are returning more than ten license plates, you need to return them to MVA warehouse 150 H Blades Lane, Glen Burnie MD 2106. Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm along with the form VR-317 and the vehicle’s registration.
